Election seasons can be unpredictable, and 2024 is set to be no exception. But it turns out that election season book sales are quite stable, despite the volatility that accompanies a high-stakes election. Marketplace analysis shows that certain categories actually sell better from September to November during an election year than during a non-voting year.
On the fiction side, Romance, Fantasy, and Science Fiction all sell strongly. This is consistent with the narrative of readers turning to books for escapism during the stress of the election cycle.
And for nonfiction, Wellness titles sell better, which might be related to the need for self care during times of stress. Biography, Political Science, and Social Science books also overperform during election seasons, demonstrating that, at least for some readers, political action may be stoking book sales.
