Romantasy: the hybrid genre everyone is talking about. Unless you’ve been actively avoiding both social and mainstream media, the trend has crossed your path. And it’s still on the rise: at the time of writing, the hashtag “#romantasy” has over 992 million views on TikTok. Books blending fantastical elements with steamy romance aren’t new, but the craze is reaching a new—or newly enthusiastic—readership.
Since it’s a hybrid genre, readers’ discovery journeys are varied—some established fans either of Fantasy or Romance are drawn in by the worldbuilding or new takes on familiar tropes. Still other readers are intrigued by the hype (see above: 992 million views on TikTok) and open to trying a new (to them) kind of read.
But the opportunity extends beyond Romantasy. As we might expect from a composite genre, these readers are omnivorous with large and heterogeneous TBR stacks. While some do continue down the Romantasy path, many readers pivot to more traditional Fantasy or Romance, pick up other buzzy viral reads they’ve heard about, or select books that provide a complete change of pace.
